The Inca Trail is a 45km 4 day hike through the Peruvian Andes, leading to the lost Inca city of Machu Picchu (top left & below right). Machu Picchu was deliberately constructed in a place that was difficult to reach, or to see from the ground, hence its spectacular positioning perched on top of the mountains. It can be reached from Cuzco in South Peru, by guided group only, due to government limitations on how many people may walk the trail each year.

The Colca Canyon is the 2nd largest canyon in the world (the largest being nearby ... which is harder to access), and is more than twice as deep as the grand canyon which most people assume is the biggest. It is situated near Arequipa in Southern Peru, and can be visited by guided treks which descend into the canyon and back out again. The canyon is also home to the Andean condor, which can be seen swooping through the valley. Arequipa itself is the 2nd largest city in Peru, and is a beautiful town with plenty of colonial architecture.

The Santa Cruz trek near Huaraz in Northern Peru is one of the most spectacular treks in Peru. Starting from the town of Vaqueria, the 45km trek through the Cordillera Blanca will take about 4 days, hiking around 6 hours a day, and climbs from an altitude of 2900m to 4750m at its highest point.
