Mount Doom from Lord of the Rings, New Zealand

Milford Sound is one of the most spectacular locations in New Zealand. It is a large fjord, surrounded by huge cliffs, which leads out into the sea.
In winter time you can still see snow on the peaks of the cliffs, as shown in the photos.
The area is one of the wettest in New Zealand in terms of rainfall, but on a rainy day the sight of water gushing down the cliff faces is equally as spectacular.

The Tongariro crossing is considered the best one day hike in New Zealand.
It is a 17km trek which goes around Mount Ngauruhoe, which is otherwise known as Mount Doom in Lord of the Rings.
In winter time, the trek can only be attempted if the conditions are right, and requires safety gear such as crampons.
Below is a picture of Lake Taupo, the largest lake in New Zealand.
